What happens in a consultation?

The first time we meet, I would ask you a lot of questions about your or your child's health, lifestyle and diet. Together, we would then draw up a management plan that provides you with a unique set of short- and long-term options potentially to maintain or improve your or your child's health. I can provide you with a prescription of Herbal Medicine, either as dried herbs to make into a tea or in tincture form to take between one and four times daily. The prescription, consisting of up to seven different herbs, is individually tailored to meet your particular health requirements. A follow-up consultation would be held 1-4 weeks later, to see how you are progressing. Generally, I would expect to see you over a period of 2-6 months. Chronic conditions may require longer. Please be assured that all consultation meetings and notes are confidential.

How much does it cost?

The first consultation generally lasts between 45 to 60 minutes and costs £30 for an adult or £10 for a child. Follow-up consultations are shorter and therefore cost only £10 or £5, respectively. The cost of the medicines is £6 per 100ml of tincture or 100g of dried herbs. This is approximately one week's supply for an adult. For visits across central Scotland and the Lothians outwith my consultation room, there is an additional minimum charge of £15 to cover transport costs and travelling time. Please note that cancellation charges may apply for cancellation of appointments with less than 12 hours notice and for non-attendance of appointments.

What about my GP?

During the consultation, you will be asked for details of your GP, although they would not be contacted without your permission. Please note, that having discussed your health details with you, I may ask you to visit your GP. If I recommend that you really need to visit your GP, I will not provide you with an herbal prescription until you have done so.

Couldn't I just buy over-the-counter Herbal Medicines?

Well, yes you could, if you know and understand what you are buying. But, as a NIMH-registered Medical Herbalist, I can prepare a multi-herb prescription specifically for you and your symptoms. I can also advise you on medical issues, lifestyle and dietary choices, and make referral recommendations. Importantly, I can also tell you if you need to visit your GP.
