Who am I?

My name is Sarah Clarkson. I am based in Edinburgh, although I practice across central Scotland.

Where did I train?

I am a graduate of Napier University with a BSc Honours (First Class) degree in Herbal Medicine. I was also awarded the University Medal. During the four-year course, I studied Anatomy & Physiology, Clinical Medicine & Diagnosis, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Pharmacognosy, Botany, Nutrition, Aromatherapy, and Materia Medica & Herbal Practice. I also completed more than 500 hours of supervised clinical training mainly at Napier University, but also at the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine and an NHS Physiotherapy Clinic. For my year-long degree project, I examined the herbal treatment of influenza, both during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic and during modern times.

What other experience do I have?

I have gained experience over the last eight years in herb cultivation. Within my own garden, I have created two large medicinal plant plots, each containing more than twenty-five different important herbs. This has allowed me to begin harvesting my own stock of herbs and, having previously attended a short course, to start manufacturing some of my own herbal tinctures, creams and infused oils. I have also attended an Health and Safety Executive "First Aid at Work" certificated course which covered: CPR (cardio pulmanory resucitation); wounds and bleeding; respiration; circulation; bone, joint and muscle injuries; burns and scalds; allergies; dressings and bandages; handling and transportation; and poisoning.

Am I registered?

Yes, I am a Member of the professional body, the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, and a member of The Herb Society.

Do I give talks?

Yes, I give public talks on herbs, herbal medicine and the horticulture of herbs. I hold spring/summer herb walks on Corstorphine Hill in Edinburgh.
